I am Sister LaVerne King, a Sister of Mercy and educator. The Sisters of Mercy are women of faith who commit our lives to God through service, advocacy, and prayer for those in need around the world by way of a variety of ministries including education. Our core values embody service and hospitality and leading others to live in the same manner.
Since June 4, 2001, I have had the privilege of ministering in the leadership role of principal at Christ the Teacher School. I had the unique experience of being in this position at Holy Family Parish Center while the school was under construction. This was a singular opportunity experienced by only a very few blessed administrators. After working with the architects, hiring a team of teachers and staff, choosing furniture and books, etc., the school doors opened on September 3, 2002. Since that time, I have enjoyed years of partnership with parents and colleagues in leading students from the days of learning to lace their shoes in the preschool to graduation when we send them on the next leg of life’s journey armed with a foundation in the faith, academic competence, leadership ability, an orientation to service, confidence, and responsibility.
My belief in the value of Catholic education began in my personal schooling at Queen of the Universe Elementary School and Bishop Egan High School in Levittown, PA. Following high school, I entered the Sisters of Mercy in Merion, PA. My education continued at Gwynedd-Mercy University, Arcadia University, and the Maryknoll Institute of Language in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Since then ministry options have provided a vast experience from grade one to college not only in Delaware but also in the Philadelphia area, Williamsburg, Virginia, Hialeah, Florida, and a missionary experience in Chulucanas, Peru.
I feel very privileged to be a Catholic school educator. It has provided such blessed life of guiding children and youth in collaboration their parents and within a faith-filled environment.
